Halloween Guidelines: Dental Abrasion and Candy

Posted .

One of the biggest concerns individuals need to worry about during the Halloween season is dental abrasion. Dental abrasion occurs due to a wearing down of your tooth enamel to the point that cavities and decay have occurred. It is important to make sure you’re taking this time to take steps to properly treat your teeth as well as to avoid substances that can easily damage them further.

Although brushing is extremely effective for keeping your mouth clean, it is important to make sure you are using products that are not overly abrasive. This includes low abrasive toothpaste and a toothbrush with soft bristles. Furthermore, the size of the brush head should also be a comfortable size to avoid abrasion. In addition, never brush your teeth immediately after eating or drinking acidic foods, as the brush and the toothpaste can further wear down your enamel.

If you do eat acidic foods, clean your mouth out as soon as possible. Rinsing your mouth out with water or a low abrasive mouthwash can help. Furthermore, to help stimulate saliva flow, a known acid neutralizer, chew sugarless gum. In addition, never eat acidic foods or substances as snacks, but rather as part of a larger meal. For additional help with your oral health care, visit your dentist for routine checkups and oral exams.
